Kitbashing Can Create Confusion

You find something that appears desirable at first glance, but further investigation leads you down a different path. It's an occurrence not all that uncommon with Boomer Hobbies. Kids brought up building things with Gilbert Erector Sets and Kenner Bridge and Girder Sets liked to tinker.
Consider these A-A Alco Diesel Locomotives. Back in 1969, at the very end of Post-War production, Lionel sold the Power Unit without a dummy. Of course, these Alco shells are easily interchangeable with either powered or dummy frames. The fact that the Power Unit has a 3-psotion E-Unit instead of the more typical 2-position variety tells us that some kid built his own non-factory variation.
