Outside the Big Three of Toy Trains

The top three manufacturers of toy trains during the Post-War period (1945 to 1969) were Lionel, Marx and American Flyer. Lionel and Marx focused primarily on 'O 'Gauge with Lionel at the high end of pricing and Marx in the bargain basement. The A.C. Gilbert Company's American Flyer trains were mostly 'S' Gauge, although all three companies competed in HO scale.

Of course, there were plenty of hopeful contenders. Some stuck around for a while, like Colber of Hillside, New Jersey. Others didn't make it beyond a very narrow window of time. Parfait Products of Chicago and then Benton Harbor, Michigan was one such manufacturer. They made a flexible style of three-rail 'O Gauge track sold in rolls. You could also buy a reversible manual switch that worked as left or right depending on what side served as the base. The company only lasted a few years during the late 1930s.
