The Dawn of the Slot Car Era

Scalextric (originally Scalex with their 1940s wind up models) was one of the first successful producers of electric slot cars. The British factory stated out using all-metal track during the late 1950s and switched over to rubber track with metal guides around 1960 when the first catalog was published. This established a template for later slot cars in all scales (1/64, 1/24th, etc.). As you can see in the image, the Lotus F1 car comes apart in the middle to access its motor and rear axle gearing. The body is secured by a nylon pin at rear. The popularity of slot car racing peaked during the late 1960s, but is currently realizing increased interest - primarily from the now retired Boomers who grew up racing them.
